Chest holsters have become very popular with those who carry a large frame handgun during outdoor activities. However, experience has shown us that single cross strap holster carry quickly becomes uncomfortable during full time carry. This results in some people becoming complacent enough to carry their handgun / bear spray inside their backpack where it will be inaccessible during a quick emergency.
A better solution is to design a holster which provides quick access, security, and 24 / 7 comfort. This rig features a premium handmade leather holster which has friction tension adjustment to retain the handgun in most situations and still allow for a fast draw. The holster also features an extra security strap to provide additional handgun retention for extra strenuous activities such as horseback riding, atv, boating, biking, emergency tree climbing, etc. When the security strap is not in use it can be snapped out of the way behind the holster opening so it will not interfere with drawing or reholstering. The security strap is adjustable for tension and the hammer style you have on your revolver. The retention strap has a pull tab that works with or without gloves, and the strap can be quickly applied or removed from over the hammer of your revolver. (For those using DLS PRG revolver grips with a lanyard ring, the lanyard can be attached to this chest rig to retain the revolver even when it is knocked from your grasp).
Those experienced with other chest holster designs are aware how the holster pulls out of position when trying to draw the gun. This leads to an interrupted draw, and the operator covering his weak hand with the gun muzzle because he grabs the bottom of the holster in an effort to hold the holster while pulling on the grip of the firearm with his other hand. This is dangerous activity. This improved chest holster design incorporates multiple tie down points on the back side of the holster so the operator can prevent holster pull away by lashing the bottom of the holster to a trouser belt loop, belt line, or upper thigh. The back side of the holster also features a screwdriver adjustable securing point for the retention strap.
(Safety Note) There are various opinions as to revolver or autopistol carry in dangerous game country. Consider the fact that autopistols may not reliably function with bullets designed for dangerous game. Revolvers are not dependent on bullet nose shape for reliable function. Some autos are in a cocked or semi cocked condition when carried with a round in the chamber. This means your arm / hand / friend / horse etc. may be crossed by the muzzle of your loaded handgun. (Gun safety rule two: Never let your muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy). High quality modern revolvers are commonly referred to as being in a relaxed action state. In other words they are not cocked until the operator supplies the energy to cock and fire the gun. Quality, tested and tuned revolvers are reliable, low maintenance, simple to operate, and can fire ammunition well suited to dangerous game defense. Whatever you decide, practice and become proficient with the gun and load you choose. Study and learn from the experience of others in dangerous game encounters so you will not repeat the same mistakes that lead to a 'negative outcome'.
The chest harness on this rig is designed to comfortably support the weight of a full sized handgun by way of 3 inch wide flex straps. These straps spread the weight of the handgun over a large surface area of your shoulders and the overall harness design spreads the carry weight of the handgun over your entire torso. The harness is designed to be fully adjustable for different body sizes and clothing thicknesses. The design of the harness also allows backpacks and straps to go over this chest harness with all day comfort. The waist belt of this chest rig is fully adjustable and keeps the holster close to the torso. Extra cartridges can be carried on the waist belt.
People who live in dangerous game country and understand that an out of reach firearm will do them no good in an unexpected encounter can customize this rig even further. Experienced outdoorsmen will often use this chest rig over their baseline outer shirt, then layer outer clothes over the top as the weather dictates. This allows the gun and ammo to have protection from the elements, yet accessibility is maintained through the front opening of the garments. Carrying this rig the same way all the time allows one harness size setting to be sewn in place. Simply set the size of the harness to suit you, triple check that all is correct by wearing that size setting for several days. If all is perfect for you, you can then hand or machine sew the straps in place, then carefully snip off the strap adjustment sliders. Once all this is done correctly, there will be zero lumps in the harness, it will be ultra comfortable, there will be no excess strap tangling problem, and the entire rig can be quickly put on and taken off by the single waist buckle.
The leather components of this rig are sewn with heavy duty nylon thread so it will not absorb water or rot. The leather is sealed to resist water and moisture with the best leather sealant available. This allows backcountry adventurers to have a heavy duty chest rig that will not fracture like kydex. Wise outdoorsmen will make a habit of protecting their revolver, ammo, and holster rig from water and elements with a waterproof overgarment that still allows quick access to the revolver. This holster can be adjusted for high chest carry when fishing with tall waders. |
